Breakthrough innovations mainly come from unusual places. A very passionate fan of AI tech solutions, I, Mohammad S A A Alothman, have always followed stories and myths related to such marvelous inventions. Today I have this fantastic story to narrate.
I am here to present Cristian Ponce and Théo Schäfer. These two great brains invented an AI scientist for something like doing all lab labor works quite efficiently and effortlessly without boredom and tedium in laboratory operations.
From A Halloween Party To A Visionary Idea
It all started with a Halloween party in 2023. This is the chance encounter in which Ponce, still dressed as Indiana Jones from that Halloween party, bumped into Schäfer, recently graduating from a master's in underwater autonomous robots at MIT and just a few months into his stint working on possibilities of extraterrestrial life at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab.
And while Ponce had taken on an experience at Cal Tech working extensively with bio-engineers in strains of E. coli.
Their conversation immediately shifted to how terrible working in the lab was, especially the tedium of genetic engineering work. Ponce complained about the hours pipetting liquids from container to container, while Schäfer saw an opportunity emerging.
The frustration shared between the two formed the roots of Tetsuwan Scientific, a company that uses AI tech solutions to transform lab workflows.
The Genesis of Tetsuwan Scientific
Make automation accessible for every lab. Existing options were either too expensive or too computationally intensive (requiring deep coding skills), and therefore unsuitable for most research laboratories.
It is this fact that the response lay not in designing sophisticated robots but in equipping these robots with the intelligence to answer questions through AI. The idea of the AI scientist: a machine learning system capable of repetitive lab tasks while adjusting for changing experimental parameters without the need for constant reprogramming.
Game-Changer: The OpenAI Multi-Model Product
That was the day of "aha" moments: co-founders, among others, who saw OpenAI present its multi-modal offering in May 2024. Displaying conversational interfaces and breakthrough reasoning abilities of OpenAI demonstrated how large language models can fill the gaps between human scientists and automated systems.
As Ponce described, We’re looking at this crazy breakneck progress of large language models right before our eyes. For Tetsuwan Scientific, this technology represented the missing link in creating a fully functional AI scientist—one that could understand and execute scientific tasks with minimal human intervention.

A cyber scientist takes robotics and high-level AI into a lab, simulating much of what the human researcher would do. They are far more different than traditional lab automation tools, as they can:
